In today’s guest blog post from Teresa Ford of Take Root (fifth in a series of 6 on our Sunningdale Mills blog), she shares the benefits of choosing to eat all organic products.

Why Choose Organic?

It can be difficult to know if it is worthwhile investing in organic products. We receive mixed messages that leave us wondering which direction to take. While more research would be helpful, we can see from the currently available scientific evidence that it makes sense to choose organic products, when possible.

There are two main reasons for this. The first is that organic crops have higher antioxidant activity than conventional crops. Why does that matter? Several decades of dietary research findings suggest that consuming greater amounts of antioxidant-rich foods might help to protect against diseases. We don’t yet know the reason, although there are many hypotheses.

The second main reason is that organic crops have lower pesticide levels than conventional crops. The World Health Organization states, “By their nature, pesticides are potentially toxic to other organisms, including humans, and need to be used safely and disposed of properly”. We know that people who live or work around pesticides have an elevated rate of disease (see here). We know that when we eat conventional produce, we have higher levels of pesticides in our blood (see one study here). However, further research is needed to determine if those increased levels of pesticides in our blood raise our risk of disease. I’m sure there are studies now in progress.

So these are the main reasons why it makes sense, at least until research reveals otherwise, to eat organic food when possible. Having said that, for optimal health, let’s take every opportunity to eat unprocessed plant-based food. If it’s organic, even better!

This week I baked a batch of my favourite muffins using Sunningdale Mills Organic Sprouted Flax Powder. Have you heard about all the amazing health benefits of flax? I have an entire blog post dedicated to it! A mixture of ground flax and water works well as an egg replacement in baking. These Vegan Banana Crumb Muffins from The Minimalist Baker website are egg-free and you’d never know it. Instead of adding the walnuts to the batter, I put the walnuts on top and skip the crumble. Delicious!

Enjoy the muffins, and you can buy your Organic Sprouted Flax Powder here!
