In today’s second in a series of 6 guest blog posts with healthy recipes ideas from Teresa Ford of Take Root , she shares the benefits of adding whole grains to a healthy diet.

The Health Benefits of Whole Grains

Whole grains are a part of a healthy diet, to be sure. Research shows that people who eat more whole grains tend to live significantly longer. Whole grains appear to reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and stroke. They are significant sources of fibre, B vitamins, several trace minerals, as well as phytochemicals. Further, they contain no cholesterol and are low in fat. How is that for a package deal?!

Processed or refined grains, on the contrary, are known to be an important contributing factor to overweight, obesity and chronic diseases. Examples of refined grains are white pasta, white rice and white bread. The more a whole grain is processed, the more its nutritional value diminishes. And fortifying refined grain products does not make up for all the nutrients that have been stripped away.

Including whole grains into your meals can be both easy and delicious. We can simply combine “a grain, a green and a bean” of our choice to knock our meal out of the park nutritionally. Top it off with a sauce or dressing for added flavour and moisture, and our meal is ready to enjoy. My combination this time around is Sunningdale Mills Organic Sprouted Brown Rice, steamed broccoli, black beans and barbecue sauce. By choosing one of Sunningdale Mills’ sprouted organic grains, we’ll both amp up the nutrition and get this meal on the table even more quickly, because sprouted grains have shorter cooking times.
