Whole grains have always been recommended as part of a healthy diet and research shows that they also help lower the risk of several diseases. Today we share three reasons to choose Sunningdale Mills Organic Sprouted products; 1. What is a Whole Grain? 2. How whole grain products are identified with the Whole Grain Stamp and 3. Sharing recipes this week is how we are celebrating Whole Grains Month!
1. What is a Whole Grain?
Any grain is considered a whole grain if all three parts of bran germ and endosperm are present. If there is any removal of any parts of the grain, then it is considered a processed grain. At Sunningdale Mills we only use all organic whole grains for our sprouted grains and blend products. Read more in depth about Whole Grains 101 at Oldways Whole Grain council site.
2. What is the Whole Grain Stamp?
The Whole Grain stamp that you see on two of our products is an easily recognisable sheaf of grain on a golden-yellow background with a black border.
It signifies products that have a significant amount of whole grains and how many grams of whole grain ingredients are in a serving of the product. Oldways Whole Grain Council is the group responsible for administration of the Whole Grain Council stamp on over 12,000 products in 58 Countries. Research shows that 84% of consumers know recognize that whole grains are healthy and this stamp helps consumer’s easily identify authentic whole grain products.
3. Sharing recipes to celebrate Whole Grain Month!
Whole Grain Month has been set up to fall (pun intended) each September by our friends at Oldways Whole Grain Council and we are celebrating Whole Grains Month by sharing a recipe a day that is from Oldways Grain Council recipe site giving you a chance to try a unique new way to enjoy our Organic Sprouted products.
Today’s recipe is made with our Crunchy Trail Mix Cereal with Organic Sprouted Grains ( Whole Grain Stamp – 39 g per portion) and Organic Sprouted Flax Powder and was inspired by this Slow Cooker Pumpkin Steel Cut Oatmeal recipe from Whole Grains Council website and as we use all the ingredients from Remark Fresh Markets in London
Ingredients - serves 4
Canola oil
1 cup Crunchy Trail Mix Cereal with Organic Sprouted Grains
1/4 cup Organic Sprouted Flax Powder
1 cup almond milk
1 1/4 cups water
5 Tbsp. Maple syrup
1 Tbsp. vanilla extract
1 cup pumpkin puree (not pie filling)
2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
2/3 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
1/4 cup chopped pecans
Directions
Coat the inside of slow cooker with canola oil to prevent sticking.
Combine water, spices, maple syrup, vanilla, flax, and pumpkin in a spate bowl.
Pour pumpkin mixture and Crunchy Trail Mix Cereal into slow cooker and stir until mixture thoroughly combined. Sprinkle top of mixture with cranberries and pecan pieces.
Cover and cook on low for 4.5 to 5 hours. You can do this ahead of time and store in the fridge, or set your timer for overnight cooking if you have a programmable slow cooker.
It is delicious reheated, adding water or almond milk to make it creamier
