Breastfeeding in the U.S. is rising and in 2013 over 81% of mothers breast-fed their infants until they were at least 6 months old (Rettner. R, LiveScience.com). It’s a fairly common occurrence for nursing mothers to suffer from postpartum depression (PPD) in the weeks/ months following the birth of their child. First time mothers are known to experience this more than second or third time pregnancies. It’s not determined what causes this depression, but a degree of stress, anxiety, depression and hormonal factors all can play a roll. (BreastFeedingBasics- Articals)

“In a 2007 study, 41 breast-feeding Japanese mothers were randomly divided into two groups, one eating white rice and the other sprouted brown rice, for two weeks. When psychological and immune tests were administered to both groups, the sprouted brown rice group was found to have decreased feelings of depression, anger-hostility, and fatigue, and a significant increase in s-igA levels, indicating better immune system function.” (European Journal of Nutrition, October 2007)

Sprouted brown rice has more than enough benefits to the human body. This study shows the benefits from eating brown rice as a nursing mother linked to postpartum depression. Help fight and overcome postpartum depression by eating brown rice during and after pregnancy.
